Hello everyone!
A new feature of cash1977detecting.blogspot.com will be various
pictures and stories of some of my collectibles.
I'll begin with the #1 piece in my collection.
The Babe Ruth autograph!
My Grandfather, Tuffy, worked on golf courses his entire life. He was a career Golf Course Superintendent. He was working one day at Long Shore Country Club in Westport, Connecticut in 1946 when The Great Bambino showed up to play a round of golf. My Grandfather was not a regular caddy, but he was used to cater to the higher end golfers when they played.
I guess it doesn't get any more high end then The Sultan of Swat!
The Babe played, and at the end of his round, signed two score cards for my Grandfather. One of them is the entire score card, my dad has that one and it's locked away, safe and sound.
The one you see below was forgotten about for about 40 years.
When my parents were moving years back, my dad found an old journal he kept when he was a kid. While flipping through the pages, a little sliver of paper falls out, I picked it up and almost peed myself! My dad and I were both awestruck, as he didn't remember that this one existed. We are not sure why this one was cut out of the card, maybe the card was already used, I don't know. The Babe also apologized to no end because he rarely carried cash when he played so he wasn't able to give Tuffy the tip he deserved. He did however give him fifteen cents, a dime and a nickle, which my father has stashed away to this day. As they walked to the clubhouse, my Grandmother, Flo, and my dad, who was two at the time, were waiting for my Grandfather. The Babe introduced himself to her, picked my dad up, threw him up in the air and caught him two or three times. My Grandmother told this story until she passed away how she almost had a heart attack watching her baby fly through the air!
I know this was long, but between the value of the piece, and the sentimentality of the story, it had to be told!
(Nat Fein's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of Ruth at Yankee Stadium, June 13, 1948. This was his last public appearance before his death. My favorite photo ever, and the one that will be framed with the autograph)
